Adapting patterns for orthotic supports
Katica ·
Adapting knitwear to accommodate orthotics, braces, and supportive devices requires a few deliberate modifications. With some planning, your garments can fit comfortably and look intentional.
Identify pressure points
Consider where the orthotic sits and where it may rub. Add extra ease in those areas—either through increases, strategic gussets, or by choosing patterns with built-in flexibility. Stretch and elasticity are your friends.
Access points
For leg or arm wear, consider how the garment will go on and off. Side zippers, Velcro closures, or strategic openings can make dressing easier without sacrificing warmth or support.
